Storm Damage Repair Services in the City of Carson.
Preparation is key! If we don't take the time and effort to inspect our property surroundings, we can be dealing with costly maintenance issue's. Heavy rains and strong winds can cause destruction, we all know mother nature isn't a force to be reckoned with.
Here are 5 tips you can do today to prevent damage to your home.
- Have your roof inspected every year: Inspecting your roof for any flaws is crucial. By doing so, you can save yourself thousands of dollars by preventing more costly damages when heavy rain comes in.
- Know how to shut off utilities: When a heavy storm comes around, you may have to shut off your utilities. Make sure where these utilities are located and how to properly shut them off.
- Clean your gutters: If your gutters aren't clear and heavy rain kicks in, you could have high risk of water damage to your home.
- Inspect the foundation of your home: Water creeps and will find its way into your property if cracks or gaps are surrounding the area. Inspect for any signs of cracks and gaps around your home to prevent water intrusion to your property.

Los Angeles and Orange County Heat Storm
6/9/2021 (Permalink)
June gloom may not be the case this year as we get ready for high temperatures coming in. Los Angeles is expected to get temperatures in the 80s and 90s this weekend, not just for the weekend, extending to next week as well.
Los Angeles and Orange counties will see a few clouds today on Wednesday June 9th, with a high of 75 degrees by 2pm. After today, temperatures will continue to rise through the weekend, hitting the 80's, 90s in the valleys and Inland Empire.
Be Cautious & Stay Hydrated
Remember to drink plenty of liquids to stay hydrated if you plan on getting out this weekend. Also, don't forget how HOT it can get inside your vehicles when the windows are rolled up. Remember not to leave your kids or pets in the car with the windows up, even if you're just running in the store real quick. You'd be surprised how many people are still doing this these days.

We encourage everyone to take the simple steps necessary to protect themselves and loves ones from injury and their property from storm damages.
Those who live near the brush fires that occur every summer should be aware of the extreme dangers from the debris left over. After an intense wildfire, burned vegetation and charred soil makes it hard for the soil to absorb the rain fall, causing flooding for the homes below.

Restoring Your Property From Storm Damages
We've all had a scary incident when mother nature strikes and causes unexpected damages to our property. This could be a tree falling on your roof, flooded waters coming in, freezing plumbing pipes bursting, the list goes on.
When dealing with this classification of water damage, its important to act on the first few hours in which the damages occurred to avoid permanent damages, and claim expenses.
Fist step would be to extract all standing water to begin the drying stages. Once we've extracted and set up equipment to properly dry materials, we then disinfect all affected areas and begin the reconstruction stage.
There's a science to this. You cant just gather towels to dry up the affected area, then follow it up by placing your summer fan to finish off the drying of your carpet floors, don't forget the padding underneath that acts like a sponge!

Storm Safety

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez held a virtual news conference Friday morning in anticipation of Hurricane Isaias moving toward Florida's coastline. While many of us will be unaffected by the eastern weather, it's always good to know how you would react in the given situation.
Combined with the COVID pandemic, expect danger zones to be closed down and even evacuated. There's no point in sticking around as you will just be putting yourself in harm's way!
Be sure to lock things up and stock up on the necessary goods to stay alive. On the west coast, we can help out by sending supplies or clean up crews to affected areas. This is something that SERVPRO of Redondo Beach has participated in during past disasters.

Storms and powerful wind gusts can cause major damage so it's wise to be fully prepared for such an occasion.
Counting the seconds between seeing lightning and hearing thunder can be a last resort method of figuring out if you're in immediate danger. Every 3 seconds is equal to roughly 1 mile.
Here are a few steps to take for ensuring your safety:
1. Secure or take inside patio furniture
2. Don't stand near windows or doorways
3. Unplug all electrical devices
4. If hail is present, put a thick blanket over your car if you can't move it to your garage.
These are just a few safety tips to follow, but they will help you survive these disastrous situations.

Storm Survival Kit
6/10/2020 (Permalink)
In the event of a storm emergency, it's important to have some essential supplies around your house. Here's a small, but important list to get started:
1. Water. Probably the most important thing to have. FEMA recommends having a storage of 1 gallon per person per day.
2. Food. Non-perishables will be your best friend here. Examples include canned vegetables and soup.
3. Battery-powered or hand-cranked tools. Ideally, this includes flashlights and radios.
4. First aid kit. You never know when an injury will occur so be sure to have some medical supplies on hand!
5. Sleeping bags. Keeping warm and being able to sleep is extremely important in emergency situations. Check to see if you have some spare blankets laying around.
6. Cash. In the event of a catastrophe, the cash you have on you may be the only currency you have for some time. It doesn't have to be thousands of dollars, but hundreds is definitely a safe bet.
These are just some things to keep in mind for emergencies, the list of things you want is much longer. But don't be discouraged, this is a great start if you have these things!

Solar Storm Hitting Earth!!
6/11/2019 (Permalink)
Beautiful auroras consequences of a solar storm.
Browsing the internet this morning I got caught by this news of imminent possibility of a "Solar Storm"
Since at SERVPRO our main concern is to be ready 24/7 to respond to Storm, I wanted to know more about this phenomena, and found out about the consequences to our beautiful plant.
Here is the definition of Solar Storm : A solar storm happens when major eruptions called solar flares or coronal mass ejections happen in the solar atmosphere. If these events take place on the part of the sun facing Earth, they can send electromagnetic radiation and charged particle radiation hurtling our way.
The consequences can be quit different from one Solar Storm to another.
the most harmless effect is beautiful displays of the auroras along the northern or southern latitudes. Auroras are natural light display in the Earth's sky, predominantly seen in the high-latitude regions.
But if the solar storm is strong, and the electromagnetic radiations are then it can affect functions of satellite system, GPS systems, and power plants. in 1989 a Solar Storm caused a 9 hour power outage in Quebec. Scientists claim that in some cases electric power plants can even explode, and we will have to deal with months and months of power outage, and expensive repairs.
Well now I'm thinking about a solution to help prevent extensive damage, and I think I have some ideas:
Lets not rely on our smartphones if we want driving directions and look them up, memorize and write down directions, let's make sure we have our battery operating lights handy, and lets stay away from electrical power plants as much ass we can. Have our emergency kit ready and handy, and let's hope we will get the beautiful part of this mysterious storm with blue and green lights in the sky.
Wishing for sky storms of wellness, happiness, peace and prosperity for all.

Tsunamis in California
7/24/2018 (Permalink)
Tsunami Warning
Living in beautiful California is probably on the best places to live in the world, especially in Southern California. We have the best weather, surrounded by the ocean, mountains, and desert... but have you ever thought about a Tsunami hitting our land?
Tsunamis are more common in the Pacific Ocean where the megathrusts (subduction zones) are so common (Aleutian Islands, Alaska, Chile, Philippines, Japan etc). Even though these places are more likely to see a Tsunami, we can also experience the scary disaster any day and any time of the day!
Tsunamis are a big threat to anyone who lives along the coast. Most tsunamis, about 80 percent, happen within the Pacific Ocean's Ring of Fire, a geologically active area where tectonic shifts make volcanoes and earthquakes common.
In 2004, more than 200,000 people the most ever recorded—died in an Indian Ocean tsunami that was triggered by an earthquake off Sumatra, Indonesia.
Tsunamis can travel as far as 10 miles inland, depending on the shape and slope of the shoreline.
Living in Carson California, you are less than 10 miles away from the ocean which makes you vulnerable to Tsunamis... Do you have a plan of action for the unexpected?
What to Do if a Tsunami Hits LA...
7/24/2018 (Permalink)
Tsunami WARNING!
STAY READY! A study says that the California coast, including the Port of Long Beach, could be hit by a tsunami... But just off the coast, scientists say another danger lurks: several major faults capable of producing major earthquakes that could send tsunamis crashing into Los Angeles and San Diego.
With that being said, living in the city of Carson California, the residents are vulnerable and should be prepared! Each family should have a disaster kit set in place for the unexpected.
Have a flashlight for each member of the family and extra batteries. Avoid foods that make you thirsty, have a few cases of water, canned food, dried fruits and protein bars, powdered milk, blankets, can opener, portable radio, and toothbrushes/toothpaste are all things that should be considered in your disaster kit.
Once you have all your family and belongings in place, and set to evacuate the premises. Have a map of your city set in place for different evacuation routes to look over.
Remember... more than likely its going to be chaos and outrageous traffic jams if everyone has the same exit plans. Look over small streets to get inland as quick as possible, head towards higher elevation and most importantly, stay calm!
Causes for Plumbing Issues
6/8/2018 (Permalink)
Pipe's Causing Water Damage
Your plumbing system is an intricate part of your home or business. With pipes and faucets that carry water and remove waste. Here are some some of the common causes of a pipe burst
- Clogs - When there are clogs in the pipes, water pressure can build inside, causing the pipe burst open.
Homeowner Damage - Property owners might cause accidental damage to piping when renovating their home or business.
Extreme Weather - When the temperatures drop below freezing levels, the cold water left in pipes can freeze and expand, causing pipe to bursts.
Tree Roots - Tree roots are naturally drawn to moist soil. If piping is set too close to a tree, the roots may grow towards the pipes and eventually break through them. This can be a headache when dealing with this situation.
- Improper Installation - If pipes are not properly installed in the beginning, it can lead to future problems, including pipe's malfunctioning/breaking.
In this situation you will need immediate help to extract the water and contents effected as quickly as possible to minimize damage to your property and belongings.

Stay Ready For Your Family

ARE YOU READY?
You may need to survive on your own after an emergency. This means having your own food, water and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last for at least 72 hours. Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster but they cannot reach everyone immediately. You could get help in hours or it might take days. Depending on the nature of the disaster road conditions may prevent help from arriving in a timely manner. Earthquake, hurricane's, or heavy rain, we should always be ready when the unexpected occurs.
Additionally, basic services such as electricity, gas, water, sewage treatment and telephones may be cut off for days or even a week, or longer. Your supplies kit should contain items to help you manage during these outages. If the power goes out keep your pipes from freezing by shutting off the valve that allows water to come into your home. Then, open any drain valves and all faucets and let them run until the pipes are empty (it's helpful to identify these valves in advance). Next, flush all toilets and pour denatured alcohol into toilets and sinks to prevent water in the traps from freezing.
Be prepared for a power outage by keeping necessary items centrally located in your home. Take the time to ensure that everyone in your family is aware of the "kit." Periodically check your kit to see that batteries operate properly. The following is a list of items that are suggested to keep on hand:
1. Flashlights for each family member
2. Battery-operated radio and clock
3. Extra batteries
4. Containers of bottled water
5. Canned, freeze-dried or dehydrated food, powdered milk, baby supplies for infants
6. Non-electric can opener
7. List of important phone numbers
8. First-aid kit
Following a disaster, there may be power outages that could last for several days. Stock canned foods, dry mixes and other staples that do not require refrigeration, cooking, water or special preparation. Be sure to include a manual can opener and eating utensils. The following items are suggested when selecting emergency food supplies. You may already have many of these on hand.
•Store at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food.
•Choose foods your family will eat.
•Remember any special dietary needs.
•Avoid foods that will make you thirsty.
•Choose salt-free crackers, whole grain cereals and canned foods with high liquid content.
•Ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits, vegetables and a can opener
•Protein or fruit bars
•Dry cereal or granola
•Peanut butter
•Dried fruit
•Nuts
•Crackers
•Canned juices
•Non-perishable pasteurized milk
•High energy foods
•Vitamins
•Food for infants
•Comfort/stress foods
We hope this was useful and made you consider this as a priority, you just never know when something tragic might occur, its always best to stay READY.

Check Your Home
If your home is more than 40 years old and hasn't had any major renovations... You should consider doing a walk through to see if you have any signs of corroded pipes, roof leaks, Mold growth, bellying from a storm, etc...
Water damage is one of the most expensive, stressful claims to deal with, when you suffer from a loss. Remember that insurance companies don't cover flood insurance unless you have it!
The pH of the water: In copper piping systems, if the pH is under a certain level it harms the protective barrier of the pipe and leads to corrosion. Oxygen in the water: Oxygen degrades metals, gradually converting the metal to rust.
In plain words, the metal from the piping dissolves into the water as a result of various causes, causingpipe failure and corrosion of water heaters, appliances, and fixtures. In plumbing systems, corrosion is due to physical and chemical reactions between the pipe material and water.
Bellying occurs when part of a storm pipe begins sinking downward after becoming unstable. This causes a reservoir where blockages can occur due to the build up of large debris. If left unchecked, problems with your storm pipe system can causeflooding and other water damage.
