Mold on a wall in closet An unfortunate side affect of moisture

As most of us in Carson and the entire South Bay know we had one of the wettest winters in recent memory this year.  There were record numbers of homes with major damage to roofs and the interior living spaces.  However these were only the homes with obvious damage.

What do I mean by that, you  may ask...

There are many homes that were affected by the rain and storms that did not get quite wet enough to drip into the living environment, or even show obvious signs at the time that are now showing signs of microbial growth, or in layperson's terms...  Mold.

If you are unlucky enough to find yourself in this situation, don't panic.  We at SERVPRO® of Carson/West Carson have you covered.  Our technicians have decades of experience in mold remediation and will do what it takes to get your home back to "Like It Never Even Happened."

Cover or Discover

6/13/2022 (Permalink)

California weather is regularly warm & sunny with very little rain in sight year round. However, for the rainy days that do surface, it is best to stay prepared & make sure home insurance coverage is up to date. Alongside coverage is making sure your home is equipped with functioning drains, seals, & gutters. Keeping a clean yard, roof, and home could be the difference between saving time, money, & life.

A result of poor maintenance could be water intrusion during a rain storm into your home. To avoid such a disaster keep all gutters, drains, & irrigation systems clean & free of debris that may cause a malfunction or broken materials creating water overflow into your home. Inspecting the roof prior to a rain storm could also prove to be useful to avoid heavy damages.

In regards to having a clean yard, this can eliminate any items, objects, or tree branches to breach your home and cause a leak into your home. Organizing the yard can also help prevent any hidden cracks, broken seals, or damages to the home that may be a problem during rainy weather.

Water Damage Negligence

6/9/2022 (Permalink)

When leaky water source pipes are not addressed immediately, the damages can be extensive & costly. It is always best to locate & stop the water source to avoid major damages once they have been spotted. Mold infestation, costly extensive damages, or structural problems are a few of the problems that could result from neglecting water leaks.

Mold may grow on walls, clothes, toys, & even electronics. Mold is a type of fungi that may grow indoors or outdoors. Mold spores thrive in moist & warm environments, in which they travel through  air and if contact other similar environments they will begin to spread. By keeping humidity levels low, with the use of a dehumidifier for example, you can prevent or decrease the chances of mold growth in your home or place of business.

SERVPRO of Carson/West Carson deals with water damages & mold remediations on a regulars basis. Our highly trained technicians are trained and prepared for any size emergency. For any questions, comments, or concerns you may have, feel free to reach us at (310)637-7701. Let us help you make it "Like it never even happened."

How to Properly Cleanup Sewage Damage

3/14/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO team in crawlspace disinfecting sewage. Emergency Crawlspace Sewage Cleanup

What should you do to properly clean and sanitize your home when a toilet overflow situation happens at your property.

It's important knowing what to do when you're dealing with a cringe-worthy sewage spill. Eventually it happens to all of us at some point and should be taken serious as it can be quite hazardous to the property and loved ones. Property owners in the city of Carson should immediately begin cleanup procedures and ensure that the affected areas are properly disinfected. Here are some steps to follow when dealing with a sewage situation.

1. Turn off water supply

  • Reduce the issue by containing the source is very important to help any other damages occur. Reach down to your toilet and turn the valve off clockwise into the off position. Grab the float lever to lift the seal so that it flushes. You can always call a plumber to help with these situations if you don't feel comfortable doing it on your own.

2. Locate the source

  • There can be a variety of different reasons why this sewage damage is happening at your property. You might have a kid who flushed a toy down the toilet, maybe someone is flushing hygiene products that aren't meant to be flushed. In worst cases it could be the outside swear lines that may have an issue. Finding the cause of loss is important to keep this from occurring over and over again. In some cases you may need to reach out to a local plumber to help snake the lines.

3. Clean, dry, and disinfect

  • Residents may attempt to clean and disinfect on their own. Dry up excess moisture and sanitize/disinfect the affected areas. use warm water and soap to clean the area, use a disinfectant to kill the germs. You could use a dehumidifier to dry up any moister in the walls/baseboards.

3/1/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Carson/West Carson offers a variety of services, including cleaning and restoring of electronics.

A key to restoring electronics is taking prompt action to prevent further damage. Smoke residues can contain acid that corrode metal surfaces when moisture is also present. If the residues are not removed, corrosion eats away at metals and causes electronic failure in the device.

The interior of electronic items should be cleaned and inspected by a qualified electronics technician. The fire damage restorer can clean the outside casing and treat exterior rubber parts with a lubricant to stop further corrosion.

Water Damage Scenarios

2/24/2022 (Permalink)

Water damage disasters are never predictable and never an easy thing to deal with. Especially when you don’t have a plan of action in place. Water disasters can happen in a variety of different ways. Some include busted plumbing pipes, weather related, or even appliance malfunction.

For example… Let’s say a water hose attached to a refrigerator breaks, cracks, or comes loose, causing water to leak in your kitchen. Let’s assume this disaster occurred when you were out of town or even at work for eight hours, that can be a large amount of water damage happening in an eight hour window, let alone days if you were on vacation. With the amount of time the water will flow throughout your property, saturating cabinets, flooring, baseboards, or personal belongings, that will give the water enough time to cause water damage and even giving mold the opportunity to grow. Mold only needs 24 to 48 hours to start its growth process. Levels of Fire Damage

2/22/2022 (Permalink)

Not all fires result in the same level of damage. Not all fire damages require the same type of restoration procedures. When you call SERVPRO of Carson/West Carson we will assess and provide an idea of the restoration services required to address each level of loss.

Three Levels of Fire Damage

  • Minor Fire Damages:  Only some rooms are affected from smoke residues. The amount of smoke residues is light to moderate. Restoration may involve dry cleaning, wet cleaning of ceilings, walls, floors, and contents. Few areas need to be repainted, and only minor items require replacement.
  • Medium Fire Damage: The number of areas requiring repainting and items requiring replacement increase. The amount of smoke residue is moderate and more materials require wet cleaning to remove residues. Floors may need to be refinished or replaced. Heat damage to drywall, cabinets, and other contents require more materials to be replaced. Contents may require to be cleaned at the SERVPRO facility in Carson California. Smoke odor is noticeable, possibly requiring additional deodorization procedures after cleaning.
  • Major Fire Damage: Possible structural repairs, structural framing and finishes may be charred. Fire and heat damage is severe near the cause of loss. Smoke odor is strong throughout the building and possibly pungent. Restoration will involve extensive cleaning of the structure, possibly requiring a pack out of all salvageable contents for an offsite cleaning, multiple methods of deodorization are needed to remove smoke odors. Possible board-up may be required to secure the property.

Fire damage services is a complicated service and should be done by a professional with previous experiences. Their are multiple steps to be taken and need to be executed in a timely manner to avoid further damages and expenses.

What to Expect During the Restoration Process After the Fire

Restore vs Replacing:

SERVPRO of Carson can help restore some of your items rather than replacing. We analyze your personal belongings to determine if they're restorable. We offer itemized pack out services to ensure the safety of your personal belongings that weren't affected by the fire. We can place your belongings in a safe secure storage until restoration services are completed.

This includes wood, drywall, carpet, blinds, etc, anything that retained smoke and cant be salvaged will be disposed. Once everything that was affected from the fire is out, we can then treat and cure the structure to industry standards.

Prevent Storm Damage to Your Property

6/11/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO EQ drying kitchen area Storm Damage Repair Services in the City of Carson.

Preparation is key! If we don't take the time and effort to inspect our property surroundings, we can be dealing with costly maintenance issue's. Heavy rains and strong winds can cause destruction, we all know mother nature isn't a force to be reckoned with.

Here are 5 tips you can do today to prevent damage to your home.

  1. Have your roof inspected every year: Inspecting your roof for any flaws is crucial. By doing so, you can save yourself thousands of dollars by preventing more costly damages when heavy rain comes in.
  2. Know how to shut off utilities: When a heavy storm comes around, you may have to shut off your utilities. Make sure where these utilities are located and how to properly shut them off.
  3. Clean your gutters: If your gutters aren't clear and heavy rain kicks in, you could have high risk of water damage to your home.
  4. Inspect the foundation of your home: Water creeps and will find its way into your property if cracks or gaps are surrounding the area. Inspect for any signs of cracks and gaps around your home to prevent water intrusion to your property.
  5. Dead trees and untrimmed branches: Inspect your yards for old/dead trees that need maintenance. The last thing you want is a 20 foot tree coming down crashing to your property due to heavy winds and heavy rain.

Restoring Damaged Photos

6/11/2021 (Permalink)

Sometimes our valuable belongings can be affected by water damage. When precious photos become wet, this can cause some panic. The initial reaction tends to be that they are completely ruined, but this is not the case!

Mold will start to grow within 48 hours of contact with water, so you'll have to act fast. The ideal scenario is that you are able to air dry photos with some sort of fan. If this isn't possible, you'll want to freeze the photos instead.

If there are any photos inside glass or metal frames, remove them before placing them in the freezer. Before you start freezing the photos, make sure to put waxed paper between each photograph. This will help ensure they don’t stick together.

Knowing what to do when valuables get damaged is important to salvaging them!

If you are interested in learning more or would like a professional opinion, don't hesitate to contact us today! We're ready to make it "Like it never even happened."

Restoring Your Property From Storm Damages

We've all had a scary incident when mother nature strikes and causes unexpected damages to our property. This could be a tree falling on your roof, flooded waters coming in, freezing plumbing pipes bursting, the list goes on.

When dealing with this classification of water damage, its important to act on the first few hours in which the damages occurred to avoid permanent damages, and claim expenses.

Fist step would be to extract all standing water to begin the drying stages. Once we've extracted and set up equipment to properly dry materials, we then disinfect all affected areas and begin the reconstruction stage.

There's a science to this. You cant just gather towels to dry up the affected area, then follow it up by placing your summer fan to finish off the drying of your carpet floors, don't forget the padding underneath that acts like a sponge!

The industry term Slab Leak is used to describe a leak that occurred below the concrete foundation of your property. Similar to when you're dealing with a pinhole leak, which is another industry term for a copper water line leak in between your walls or ceiling of your property.

These leaks can be caused if water and sewer lines run below the concrete slab and rupture. Concrete is porous, if enough water surrounds the slab it can result to water damage inside your property.

Signs That You're Dealing With a Slab Leak

  • Puddle of water on your floors
  • Water puddles around your property
  • High water bills
  • Hot floor
  • Hearing water running
  • Buckled floors

Water damage is one of the most common problems a homeowner deals with at times. Undetected leaks is a big problem and should never be ignored. Water damage can occur anywhere and anytime, you can have an issue in your kitchen, laundry room, upstairs bathroom, basement, and the list goes on.

Most individuals will mop up the mess, set up a fan and call it a day with their quick cleanup methods. What's not visible to the naked eye is what homeowners should be concerned about. Storm Safety

7/31/2020 (Permalink)

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez held a virtual news conference Friday morning in anticipation of Hurricane Isaias moving toward Florida's coastline. While many of us will be unaffected by the eastern weather, it's always good to know how you would react in the given situation.

Combined with the COVID pandemic, expect danger zones to be closed down and even evacuated. There's no point in sticking around as you will just be putting yourself in harm's way!

Be sure to lock things up and stock up on the necessary goods to stay alive. On the west coast, we can help out by sending supplies or clean up crews to affected areas. This is something that SERVPRO of Redondo Beach has participated in during past disasters.

If you have any questions or concerns don't hesitate to reach out!

Water Damage Repair

7/31/2020 (Permalink)

If you find yourself experiencing water damage in your household, immediately contact SERVPRO of Redondo Beach. These matters should be dealt with professionally!

In the case that the damage is minor and you are set on doing it yourself, here are a few things to keep in mind:

1. Identify mold. This is key because it can be toxic to humans if left alone. In minor situations, cut the affected area, bag it, and throw it away.

2. Dry the affected area. You may need to purchase special equipment for this, but it's important to circulate air through the area.

3. Disinfect. The most common solution is bleach. This is to ensure there are no remaining mold spores.

4. Now you can focus on repairing things such as drywall and baseboard.

We do not suggest attempting to fix water damage yourself as it is very dangerous, these were just some guidelines to those who want to anyway.

Please contact SERVPRO of Redondo Beach with any questions or concerns.

Storm Damage Prevention

6/25/2020 (Permalink)

Storms and powerful wind gusts can cause major damage so it's wise to be fully prepared for such an occasion.

Counting the seconds between seeing lightning and hearing thunder can be a last resort method of figuring out if you're in immediate danger. Every 3 seconds is equal to roughly 1 mile.

Here are a few steps to take for ensuring your safety:

1. Secure or take inside patio furniture

2. Don't stand near windows or doorways

3. Unplug all electrical devices

4. If hail is present, put a thick blanket over your car if you can't move it to your garage.

These are just a few safety tips to follow, but they will help you survive these disastrous situations.

If you have any questions or need restoration work done, be sure to have your local SERVPRO information at the ready.

Preventing Water Damage

6/12/2020 (Permalink)

Water damage can occur at any time if we aren't sufficiently prepared. Here are some tips to make sure your chances of staying dry are maximized.

1. Disconnect your hoses. Standing water in a hose can cause a backup or freeze in cold conditions. This may result in burst pipes or damaged foundations.

2. Clean your gutters. If your gutters become blocked, they no longer serve any purpose. Make sure you clean them out twice a year.

3. Know where your water shut off valve is. Turn it off immediately in emergency situations. Also, remember to turn it off if you leave for extended periods of time.

4. Check your appliances. Make sure there are no leaks coming from things such as your refrigerator or dishwasher.

5. Monitor your water bill. Sometimes you won't know if you have a leak until you see a spike in your payments.

These are just some tips to help you avoid water damage. If you do have water damage, be sure to contact your local SERVPRO.

Mitigating Commercial Water Damage

6/12/2020 (Permalink)

Water damage can be straight forward to deal with in a small home. But when it strikes a big commercial building, it can be disastrous. For example, critical documents and equipment can be destroyed in the process. Here are 5 steps to prevent water damage in your property.

1. Research. In some areas, there are flood and sewer back-up prevention programs that are tax-deductible for business owners.

2. Hire a professional to conduct regular inspections. You never know what you might find!

3. Locate shut off valves. This is important in an emergency and every employee should know where they are.

4. Keep valuables secure. Make sure important items can be put inside a waterproof cabinet of some sort.

5. Have a Plan B. If the unthinkable happens, consider having a temporary office space you can continue working out of.

If you do experience water damage in your commercial property, be sure to contact your local SERVPRO.

In the event of a storm emergency, it's important to have some essential supplies around your house. Here's a small, but important list to get started:

1. Water. Probably the most important thing to have. FEMA recommends having a storage of 1 gallon per person per day.

2. Food. Non-perishables will be your best friend here. Examples include canned vegetables and soup.

3. Battery-powered or hand-cranked tools. Ideally, this includes flashlights and radios.

These are just some things to keep in mind for emergencies, the list of things you want is much longer. But don't be discouraged, this is a great start if you have these things!

Minimizing Water Damage To Your Wood Floors

3/27/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO is the industry leader in damage restoration, but sometimes you have to do things yourself. If for some reason, you cannot contact your local SERVPRO franchise, here are a few things to do if your wooden floors suffer water damage:

1. Remove standing water. This should seem obvious, but many would decide not to touch anything. This will save you time and money in the long run.

2. Dry your floor. Again, this may seem obvious, but steps 1 and 2 are vital to having a chance at recovering your wooden floors. The longer they're wet, the worse it gets.

3. Get some airflow going through the area. If possible, use a fan to speed up the drying process.

If you follow these three simple steps, your wood floors have a much better chance of being restored to their former glory.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call us today at 310-929-9293. As always, we're here to help make it "Like it never even happened."

3/26/2020 (Permalink)

Here we go with a pandemic that disrupted our routine.

Who would think our great country would one day close most retail stores, convention centers, arenas, and even consider to transform them to quarantine and treatment centers in some areas?

California is among the states most impacted by the disaster. Even our beaches closed.

But one thing is sure: We will be back to normal sooner or later and this time around we are going to be more cautious.

In the meantime, we need to make sure during this temporary time of lockdown we still keep our workplace, our community centers, our schools and our universities, our senior centers, and libraries, and our hotels, restaurants, and stores clean. Clean and mostly sanitized. Because now we learned it the hard way that wherever a crowd gathers infectious disease spreads easier.

For cleaning and sanitizing any building, home or facility we at SERVPRO have protocols developed by scientists according to recommendations of the CDC (Center for Disease Control) and inline with IICRC recommendations to help you have the peace of mind.

Well, our IICRC certified technician, all of them equipped with  PPE ( Protective Preventing Equipment) are  on the field helping to clean home and businesses around the city of Carson and surrounding area to get rid of water damages, mold, bio-hazard and infectious disease traces inside homes and businesses.

This is the reason we would like to take this "Shelter in Place Opportunity" to remind our community members to get ready before disaster strickes.

  2. Replace batteries of all smoke detectors and alarms inside the building.
  3. while children are at home they may want to cook, or do crafts using appliances or tools that have fire hazard. check them, make sure they are adequately turning off and educate children to never forget  to turn them off. This requires repetition, sometimes watching educational movies regarding fire hazard are the best way to teach them safety.
  • Make sure your electrical wiring at home or at your business, as well as the gas lines and appliances, water heater, laundry dryer, cook top and oven are maintained and no leak is detected. Gas company and Edison both have free safety inspection services.

Pipe leaking Water Leaks

Hidden leaks at your residential or commercial property can cost you a fortune and severe damages to your property. If you're not aware of these leaks, your health can be at risk!

Undetected leaks can lead to other dangers like mold/mildew growth or pest infestation, which lead to health concerns. Be responsible and take the time and effort to do a walk through of your property and pinpoint any signs of leaks.

How To Manage and Prevent Water Leaks...

Do you know where to go to turn off your main water supply at your property??? This is very important to know if you're a property owner.

Some of the effective ways to prevent water leaks include; being up to par with timely plumbing repairs, preventing pipe damage, or sometimes even installing a leak detector for your plumbing system, which will automatically turn off your water supply once it suspects a leak.

One of the most popular ways to detect leaks is simply checking the leak indicator on your meter, or simply watch for changes in the meter readings. If you come across any changes, than more than likely you have a leak.

Mold In Your Home

9/13/2019 (Permalink)

Mold is most commonly found in cold, dark areas which is why some of the most unexpected situations occur in the interior living areas. If your living room has a chimney, this adds to the possibility of mold intrusion.

Water can enter very easily through cracks in the roof or chimney. Be sure to keep an eye out for any moisture that seems out of place. A thorough examination can be done by a contractor if you aren't sure.

Now that you're aware of aerial leaks, don't forget about your carpet! If the carpet has ever been wet before, it has a high chance of containing some mold. Be sure to use a dry-cleaning carpet company if you want to wash it, never use a wet shampoo!

Mold contamination is an awful sight to behold, luckily we know how to deal with it.

Summer Storm Essentials

6/26/2019 (Permalink)

Summer storms are just around the corner and the best way to prepare is to develop a communication plan and build an emergency supply kit. Knowing how to react and having valuable items at hand is extremely important in case of emergency.

Here are some recommended items for a basic emergency supply kit:

  • Water (one gallon per person per day)
  • Food (non-perishable 3-day supply)
  • Manual can opener
  • Battery operated radio, preferably a NOAA Weather Radio
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle to signal for help
  • Clothing
  • Dust masks or bandanas
  • Plastic sheeting, garbage bags, and duct tape
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Hygiene items
  • Important documents: copies of insurance policies, identification and bank info
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Matches in waterproof container
  • Cash

This is not a complete list, but it will give you a solid foundation for a basic emergency supply kit. You'll be glad you put together all these items!

Tips To Prevent Water Leaks In Your Commercial Building

6/25/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage can seriously hinder a business if not dealt with correctly. Luckily, there are some preventative measures that can be taken against it.

1. Inspection - keep an eye on things like the building's pipes and plumbing fixtures. It may seem trivial at the time, but catching an early onset of a leak can literally save the building.

2. Maintenance - You aren't trained to spot specific things that a professional might. Schedule a technician to conduct regular maintenance on your building.

3. Cleaning - Your building's gutters play a major role in safeguarding against leaks. Be sure to check on them every once in a while to remove clogs or blockages.

4. Upgrades - Pipes and fixtures go through a lot of wear and tear. Consider upgrading or repairing them every so often. Manually turning water fixtures can also help prolong their lifespan by preventing it from becoming stuck.

These tips will help prevent commercial water damage, but there's always a chance something goes wrong. Don't hesitate to set up an Emergency Ready Profile (ERP) to get the quickest response possible.

Firework Safety For Independence Day

6/18/2019 (Permalink)

Firework Safety

It's that time of the season again... American Independence Day!

We celebrate American Independence Day on the 4th of July every year. We think of July 4th, 1776 as the day that represents the Declaration of Independence, the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation.

When celebrating with our family and friends, comes with the celebration of firing off fireworks! This can be a fun celebration with our loved ones, but can also be a very dangerous celebration if not careful.

Here are some tips to ensure safety when celebrating 4th of July and lighting off some fireworks...

  • Be sure other people are out of range before lighting fireworks.
  • Light only one firework at a time-and never re-light a "dud" firework.
  • Never discharge fireworks in metal or glass containers.
  • Be sure to have a responsible adult in charge at all times.
  • Never allow children to play with fireworks.
  • Always buy from an established retail outlet. (Please never buy illegal Fireworks)
  • Never make your own fireworks, and be on the lookout for anyone experimenting with homemade fireworks
  • (No piccolo Pete Bombs)
  • Always read and follow the directions on the label.
  • Light fireworks away from homes.
  • Keep a bucket of water nearby at all times.
  • The person discharging the fireworks should wear eye protection-and never have any part of their body over a firework.

Tips On Preventing Water Damage To Your Property

6/12/2019 (Permalink)

Keep My House Flood Free

If you're a property owner you know that you have a huge responsibility to pay your mortgage...which is not cheap! Here are some tips on preventing water damage, claim expenses, and keeping your property well- maintained.

1. Know Your Water Main Shut Off Valve Location...

No.. not the two valves underneath your sink. If you don't know where your water main shut off is located, now's the time! If you go on vacation for a few days, you can stop water from coming in to your property to avoid any floods.

2. Check Your Appliances Twice A Month...

If you can inspect your appliances a few times a month, you can prevent water damage by coming across a loose hose or a corroded pipe.

3. Update/Replace Your Washing Machine Hoses...

Most common causes of water damage is due to old brittle hoses. Always look and inspect your hoses to make sure if they need to be replaced.

4. Water Bill/Meter...

Sometimes it's a good thing to keep an eye out on your water bill. If you notice your bill was higher prior to your last, you could have a leak somewhere in your property. Look for the situation and fix it to prevent damages.

5. Install Water Detector In Your Home...

You can place an electronic device that sets off an alarm when it comes in contact with moisture. You can place this water detector by a washing machine, water heater, dishwasher, etc. This tool  is very beneficial, and can prevent an extensive amount of damages or even mold.

Some property managers, facility managers, and building owners think that to control cost of repair it is better to obtain multiple estimates for repair and choose the least expensive one. Here's why this is  not the best way to handle this issue.

  1.  Take action: People directly involved in the disasters; individuals living, working, or spending their days in the building have to wait, sometimes several day for the decision maker to decide. They may feel being ignored.
  2. Prevent extended damage: water and fire both extend their damages when they are left alone. The estimates that you obtained at one point in time does not include some work or equipment needed to repair the extended damage that happened while waiting for approval of vendor.
  3. Testings: ( asbestos, mold, lead) may be necessary for some situations and if an estimator omits that part, the actual cost of one inexpensive estimate may raise.
  4. Trust SERVPRO of Carson/ West Carson: Call 310-637-7701: Because the elite risk managers trust us and call us when disaster strikes. We know how to handle the claim so at the end it will be a win win situation for the owner as well as tenants/occupants of the building.

Mold in Schools and Workplace

6/11/2019 (Permalink)

Besides damages that moisture can cause to the building itself, the eventual growth of mold indoors in commercial building and schools are of serious concern.

It can be a cause of excessive absenteeism for individuals with pre-existing health condition.

If inside your office building or workplace, or your child's classroom high moisture is present, then it makes sense to encourage the facility manager to find solutions to control the indoor moisture.

In many cases a hidden or obvious leak inside walls is the reason of high indoor moisture.

Ideal indoor moisture for indoor quality air is between 40% and 50%.

When moisture is high, mold growth can occur. Which becomes a problem in workplace and schools.

Molds gradually destroy the things they grow on. By controlling moisture and eliminating mold growth you can:

  • Prevent damage to building materials and furnishings
  • Save money
  • Avoid potential health risks

Molds can be found almost anywhere, they can grow on virtually any organic substance, as long as moisture and oxygen are present.

There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, foods, and insulation. When excessive moisture accumulates in buildings or on building materials, mold growth will often occur, particularly if the moisture problem remains undiscovered or unaddressed.

It is impossible to eliminate all mold and mold spores in the indoor environment. However, mold growth can be controlled indoors by controlling moisture indoors.

Since mold requires water to grow, it is important to prevent moisture problems in buildings.

Moisture problems can have many causes, including uncontrolled humidity. Some moisture problems in buildings have been linked to changes in building construction practices during the 1970s, 80s and 90s.

Some of these changes have resulted in buildings that are tightly sealed, but may lack adequate ventilation, potentially leading to moisture buildup. Building materials, such as drywall, may not allow moisture to escape easily. Moisture problems may include:

  • Roof leaks
  • Landscaping or gutters that direct water into or under the building
  • Unvented combustion appliances
  • Delayed maintenance or insufficient maintenance are also associated with moisture problems in schools and large buildings

When mold growth occurs in buildings, adverse health problems may be reported by some building occupants, particularly those with allergies or respiratory problems.

Remediators should avoid exposing themselves and others to mold-laden dusts as they conduct their cleanup activities. Caution should be used to prevent mold and mold spores from being dispersed throughout the air where they can be inhaled by building occupants.

If you suspect that you have a MOLD issue in your school/commercial facility, please call SERVPRO of Carson/ West Carson (310)637-7700 to schedule a mold mitigation walk through with one of our trained certified technicians.

Solar Storm Hitting Earth!!

6/11/2019 (Permalink)

Beautiful auroras consequences of a solar storm.

Browsing the internet this morning I got caught by this news of imminent possibility of a "Solar Storm"

Since at SERVPRO  our main concern is to be ready 24/7 to respond to Storm, I wanted to know more about this phenomena, and found out  about the consequences to our beautiful plant.

Here is the definition of Solar Storm  : A solar storm happens when major eruptions called solar flares or coronal mass ejections  happen in the solar atmosphere. If these events take place on the part of the sun facing Earth, they can send electromagnetic radiation and charged particle radiation hurtling our way.

The consequences can be quit different from one Solar Storm to another.

the most harmless effect is beautiful displays of the auroras along the northern or southern latitudes. Auroras are natural light display in the Earth's sky, predominantly seen in the high-latitude regions.

But if the solar storm is strong, and the electromagnetic radiations are then it can affect functions of satellite system, GPS systems, and power plants. in 1989 a Solar Storm caused a 9 hour power outage in Quebec. Scientists claim that in   some cases electric power plants can even explode, and we will have to deal with months and months of power outage, and expensive repairs.

Well now I'm thinking about a solution to help prevent extensive damage, and I think I have some ideas:

Lets not rely on our smartphones if we want driving directions and look them up, memorize and write down directions, let's make sure we have our battery operating lights handy, and lets stay away from electrical power plants as much ass we can. Have our emergency kit ready and handy, and let's hope we will get the beautiful part of this mysterious storm with blue and green lights in the sky.

Wishing for sky storms of wellness, happiness, peace and prosperity for all.

SERVPRO of Carson Suggestion to Minimize Damages in Case of Flood

6/10/2019 (Permalink)

Relax... You called SERVPRO of Carson.

Water damage can easily be considered one of the worst disasters that may occur at your property. It’s crucial that immediate action takes place when damage is discovered. All too often, we are caught off guard and unprepared which delays response time and can lead to further damages. SERVPRO of Carson has these tips to offer:

First… are you covered? Before the damage even occurs, be protected with home owners insurance. Insurance will help soften financial blows. If its determined that you waited too long to report damages and extended damages occur, you may be left to pay for the repairs yourself. Make sure you seek assistance at the first sign of trouble.

Whether your insurance provider covers your claim or not, you should take immediate action to protect your property.

Step 1 – Locate The Source And Shut Off The Water Supply

The next move to make when you discover water damage, is to find out where the water is coming from and shut it off. Better yet, turn off the water supply to your home. Leaking pipes or a pipe that burst are the most common cause of water damage. If you have a large water loss on your hands, you should also shut off electricity and gas if possible.

Step 2 – Start A Claim With Your Insurance Provider.

You should notify your insurance company immediately of the water damages. Even if the damage is not covered, they will be able to assist you in contacting professionals to begin restoration.

Step 3 – Rescue Your Most Valuable Belongings

Gather your important things from the affected areas and put them in a safe place. Family heirlooms, jewelry, money, photos etc.. You should also allow electronics and outlets sufficient time to dry before plugging them in.

Step 4 – Eliminate As Much Water As Possible

Get rid of access water. Remove rugs and hang them to dry, use a broom or mop to assist you with standing water. A wet vacuum is also a handy tool for carpeted areas.

Step 5 – Ventilating The Affected Area

Proper ventilation is needed in order to prevent mold & mildew. Open all windows if humidity is lower outside than indoors. You may use fans to assist if you still have power and only if you are certain that mold is NOT present. Fans can spread mold, further contaminating the home.

Step 6 – Is Mold Present?

Mold is dangerous to clean on your own because disturbing the mold will cause it to release spores. According to the IICRC S520, mold remediation and removal should be done by experienced and trained technicians equipped by full protective suites, gloves, masks and using special machines such as air scrubbers and dehumidifiers.

Great news for California fire season safety! Thank you Pentagon!

6/6/2019 (Permalink)

Things will only get better for California!

Recent news regarding Pentagon agreement with State of California to prevent wildfires by allowing California National Guard to use unarmed drones to map fires 24/7 will for sure improve destructive events of fire season.

Governer of California Gavin Newsom said Monday that the Defense Department has agreed to provide information from a Cold War-era military satellite to help spot new wildfires.

The defense secretary also gave the California National Guard blanket approval through year’s end to use unmanned drones to map fires, count destroyed houses and spot survivors. The drones can peer through smoke, work at night and stay aloft much longer than manned aircraft.

Previously, state officials had to get separate federal approval each time they wanted to use the unarmed drones.

Additionally Californians can download the new application on their smartphones to get updates and prevention tips:

The “ Ready for Wildfire App” Features include:

  • Taking charge of your Defensible Space
  • Hardening your home
  • Creating an evacuation and family communication plan
  • Assembling an emergency supply kit
  • Evacuating early!

Way to go California! We believe with these initiatives, we will be several steps closer to become a paradise again.

Hidden Smoke

There are two different types of smoke to know about, wet and dry smoke...

As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. When you call SERVPRO of Carson/West Carson, we will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred.

After pretesting, the cleaning procedures will determine on the information identified before restoration begins.

Dry Smoke (Paper and Wood)

Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

The Unique Behavior of Smoke

A fire loss can result in complex damages because of the unique behavior of smoke...

Our team at SERVPRO of Carson/West Carson have had countless encounters with different types of smoke damage. We know a thing or two on how to investigate how far smoke damage may have spread in your property. We know smoke can penetrate various cavities within the structure, causing hidden damage and odor.

Top 5 Fire Starters

6/3/2019 (Permalink)

Fireproof Safety

1. Cooking Equipment

Pots and pans can overheat and cause a fire with a blink of an eye, if the person cooking gets distracted and leaves cooking unattended. Never leave your house with food cooking unattended.

2. Heating

Keep portable heaters at least 3 feet away from anything that could easily catch fire such as furniture, laundry, clother,etc... If you have a furnace, get it inspected once a year to make sure it is working to safety standards.

3. Smoking in Bedrooms

You are better off smoking outside, never make it a habit of smoking inside your home. A cigarette that is not put out properly can cause a flame, as the filter may stay lit for a few hours. It could burst into flames if it came in contact with flammable materials such as, furniture, carpet/rugs, clothing, etc... Did you know that fires started in the bedroom make up 73% of all house fire fatalities?

4. Electrical Equipment

An electrical appliance like a toaster can start a fire if its faulty or has a frayed cord. A power point that is overloaded with double adapter plugs can cause a fire from an overuse of electricity. A power point extension cord can also be a fire hazard if not used properly. Always double check these things just in case.

5. Candles

Candles look and smell pretty, but if left unattended they can cause a room to easily burst into flames. Keep candles far away from any flammable items such as carpet, clothing, paper goods, tissue boxes, or anything that can burst into flames rapidly. Always blow out the candle before leaving a room.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: Colorless, Odorless, Tasteless

3/19/2019 (Permalink)

Carbon Monoxide: Precautionary Steps Needed

Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning occurs when the CO fumes are inhaled, builds up in your bloodstream and becomes a life-threatening emergency. SERVPRO of Carson/West Carson would like to enlighten the residents of Carson and others the precautions and dangers of this colorless, odorless and tasteless poison.

Also known as The Silent Killer, every year over 400 Americans die from unintentional CO poisoning.  Last year alone approximately 20,000 people across the country visited emergency rooms with 4,000 actually being diagnosed with CO poisoning and hospitalized.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Symptoms:

  • Blurred Vision
  • Dizziness
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Confusion
  • Loss of Consciousness
  • Headache

This should not be taken lightly and we as a community need to take precautionary steps in order to keep our families and health in tacked. Provided by the United States Fire Administration, these are a few steps in order to eliminate Carbon Monoxide poisoning:

  • Vents for the dryer, stove and furnace areas need to be debris and clutter free.
  • Abstain from using grills inside the home or garage, even if doors are open.
  • When warming up your car in the garage, remove the car once starting it. Also making sure that the exhaust pipe is not blocked by any debris or other materials.

Tips on Preventing Mold

8/1/2018 (Permalink)

MOLD FREE

There are a few different ways to prevent mold and mildew growth in your home.

For instance, if you don’t have an exhaust fan in your bathroom, you need to install one. Keep it running during and after baths and showers. Anytime there is more moisture in the air than normal, using the exhaust fan can help clear it out so that it doesn’t seep into walls.

If you already have an exhaust fan but it’s not working well enough, install a stronger one that will provide better ventilation. You may also want to install a window with a screen to open to help dry out the room.

Clean your bathroom with a diluted bleach-and-water mixture every now and then to kill germs within the room, as well.

Whether you’re renovating your entire bathroom or making smaller updates, you can refresh the look of your bath and prevent mold growth.

When you're ready to repaint your bathroom, be sure to use the right paint. Semi-gloss paint is what you want for your bathroom to prevent mold growth.

There's a basic rule to follow when choosing paint sheen's... The higher the sheen, the higher the shine — and the higher the shine, the more durable it will be, and harder for mold to grow on.

Tsunamis in California

7/24/2018 (Permalink)

Tsunami Warning

Living in beautiful California is probably on the best places to live in the world, especially in Southern California. We have the best weather, surrounded by the ocean, mountains, and desert... but have you ever thought about a Tsunami hitting our land?

Tsunamis are more common in the Pacific Ocean where the megathrusts (subduction zones) are so common (Aleutian Islands, Alaska, Chile, Philippines, Japan etc). Even though these places are more likely to see a Tsunami, we can also experience the scary disaster any day and any time of the day!

Tsunamis are a big threat to anyone who lives along the coast. Most tsunamis, about 80 percent, happen within the Pacific Ocean's Ring of Fire, a geologically active area where tectonic shifts make volcanoes and earthquakes common.

In 2004, more than 200,000 people the most ever recorded—died in an Indian Ocean tsunami that was triggered by an earthquake off Sumatra, Indonesia.

Tsunamis can travel as far as 10 miles inland, depending on the shape and slope of the shoreline.

Living in Carson California, you are less than 10 miles away from the ocean which makes you vulnerable to Tsunamis... Do you have a plan of action for the unexpected?

What to Do if a Tsunami Hits LA...

7/24/2018 (Permalink)

Tsunami WARNING!

STAY READY! A study says that the California coast, including the Port of Long Beach, could be hit by a tsunami... But just off the coast, scientists say another danger lurks: several major faults capable of producing major earthquakes that could send tsunamis crashing into Los Angeles and San Diego.

With that being said, living in the city of Carson California, the residents are vulnerable and should be prepared! Each family should have a disaster kit set in place for the unexpected.

Have a flashlight for each member of the family and extra batteries. Avoid foods that make you thirsty, have a few cases of water, canned food, dried fruits and protein bars, powdered milk, blankets, can opener, portable radio, and toothbrushes/toothpaste are all things that should be considered in your disaster kit.

Once you have all your family and belongings in place, and set to evacuate the premises. Have a map of your city set in place for different evacuation routes to look over.

Remember... more than likely its going to be chaos and outrageous traffic jams if everyone has the same exit plans. Look over small streets to get inland as quick as possible, head towards higher elevation and most importantly, stay calm!

Every Home Should Have an Air Purifier

7/24/2018 (Permalink)

Clean Air? Don't Care?

Are you one of the millions who suffer from asthma or allergies everyday??? Do you own an air purifier? Do you think about the air quality of your home?

Maybe its time to invest in a air purifier for yourself. You can buy one these days under $80, the cost of a monthly cell phone service bill, to keep forever...

Most people who buy air purifiers do so in hopes of easing asthma, allergies or even dust in there homes... The very best portable air purifiers are very effective at cleaning the air, mold spores, smoke, dust, and pollen at their highest and lowest speed.

Mold spores range from 1-30 microns, and air purifiers remove mold as small as .003 microns. UV light is helpful but is not required for removing spores... Mold spores die inside the HEPA filter due to the fact that it's a dry sterile environment. A quality HEPA air purifier remove's airborne mold spores and keeps the air quality of your home at par.

If your kids or loved one's constantly suffers from asthma and allergies, try and test out a good quality air purifier to see if you notice a difference prior to buying one.

Clogged Main Line

7/24/2018 (Permalink)

Think Twice Before You Pour!

Are you pouring and flushing the wrong things down your pipes? Have you ever had water damage at your property because water was coming out of your toilets, bathtubs, or sinks?

Most water damage at times is caused due to the fact that a main line got clogged. If it's an indoor blockage, it could have occurred because of heavy materials or objects being flushed down into the drain. Blocked drains are often caused by sanitary products, paper towels or other hard to flush materials which can clog pipes and obstruct drains.

Grease. When you pour grease down the drain it sticks to the inside of your pipes and the pipes in the street. This can cause the entire pipe to become clogged over time. Other oil-based products are also dangerous to pour down your drain, such as... cooking oil, salad dressings, butter, mayonnaise, and fat.

The next time you flush or pour anything down your drains, think twice before you do it! Otherwise be prepared to pay for the consequences, literally!

What's " Indoor Air Quality" Should I Be Concerned???

7/20/2018 (Permalink)

Breathe With Me!

Have you ever been at work with a really bad headache, feeling a bit nauseous, or feeling fatigue... But once you get off work and leave the facility, your headache goes away, and you feel normal again?

That could indicate poor IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) at your work. Good indoor air quality should really be a priority to make sure you're constantly breathing the clean air that you deserve to breathe, in order to properly function at work, you need good indoor air quality.

Indoor air quality (also called "indoor environmental quality") describes how inside air can affect a person's health, comfort, and ability to work.  It can include temperature, humidity, lack of outside air (poor ventilation), mold from water damage, or exposure to other chemicals.

If you suspect that your work environment has poor indoor air quality, let your facility manager know about your symptoms and get your facility checked out.

Will My Insurance Cover a Water Leak???

7/20/2018 (Permalink)

PIPE LEAK COVERAGE

Its Friday night! you're off for the weekend, its just you and your wife, you ordered a pizza and a movie, what more can you ask for... right?

Unfortunately it was Friday the 13th and accidents do happen, in this case you have a pin hole leak coming from your upstairs bathroom... bummer! Of course with this situation, comes along a huge mess to clean up, headaches, and concern's on whether or not your insurance will cover this leak???

Virtually all home insurance policies today cover plumbing leaks that are sudden and accidental. In other words, you're covered for a pipe that abruptly springs a leak, as opposed to one that trickles out water over months or years.

If the leak is sudden and accidental, such as if a washing machine hose suddenly breaks off, or in this case a pipe bursts, you are more than likely covered. However, homeowners insurance does not cover damage resulting from poor maintenance.

Its always a good idea to call your local insurance agent and go over your policies to make sure you have the right coverage in situations like these.

Does Mold Smell? Should I be concerned?

7/17/2018 (Permalink)

When mold isn't visible, but you have a gut feeling mold is growing somewhere in your property,Can be one of the most annoying things to deal with. Bathroom's are the most common rooms in the house for mold build up. Always be sure to use the proper paints when renavating a bathroom.

Asbestos at My Job

7/11/2018 (Permalink)

The Dangers of Asbestos

Asbestos is a very dangerous mineral that should always be avoided. Its microscopic fibers cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted and it usually does not cause any immediate symptoms at all. Actually, symptoms may not be seen for 10-40 years after exposure to asbestos. However there are some symptoms that should be looked out for. If you feel you may have been exposed to asbestos You can find out more information on the EPA website.

https://www.epa.gov/

If you suspect you may have asbestos in your home or business, its very important to know what you're dealing with. When people tend to do the work on their own, they do more harm than good because they don't know the proper protocols when dealing with a situation like asbestos. Always do your homework before you start doing construction and opening walls as you can spread the cancerous mineral at your home or work facility.

Water Heaters and MOLD

6/8/2018 (Permalink)

Water heaters and MOLD

Mold around your hot water heater? it’s important to have it thoroughly removed as soon as possible when ever you see it.

Exposure to household mold can lead to numerous health problems, some of them quite serious. Exposure to mold can cause respiratory infections such as bronchitis, asthma attacks, allergic reactions, difficulty breathing, digestive problems, and even depression.

Mold can be removed from non-porous surfaces like tile floors with an antimicrobial cleanser (Bleach or Vinegar) and a scrub brush. It’s not possible to remove mold completely from porous surfaces, like carpets, drywall and floorboards. Those materials must be removed (carefully, in order not to spread mold spores to other areas of the home in the process) and replaced.

If you are experiencing any mold-related health problems or if you have respiratory problems like asthma or any disorders of the immune system, we recommend not attempting to remove mold yourself because the mold removal process will expose you to more mold spores and can make your condition worse. To protect your health, we recommend calling SERVPRO of Carson/West Carson to assure that the job gets done right.

In order to prevent mold from returning, you’ll need to repair any hot water heater leak or other problem that led to the development of mold. Hot water will have mold grow at a faster rate. Remember that MOLD feeds off humid/dark area's... Always look around your home for signs of leaks or weird smells that can lead to MOLD growth.

Causes for Plumbing Issues

6/8/2018 (Permalink)

Pipe's Causing Water Damage

Your plumbing system is an intricate part of your home or business. With pipes and faucets that carry water and remove waste. Here are some some of the common causes of a pipe burst

  • Clogs - When there are clogs in the pipes, water pressure can build inside, causing the pipe burst open.
  • Homeowner Damage - Property owners might cause accidental damage to piping when renovating their home or business.

  • Extreme Weather - When the temperatures drop below freezing levels, the cold water left in pipes can freeze and expand, causing pipe to bursts.

  • Tree Roots - Tree roots are naturally drawn to moist soil. If piping is set too close to a tree, the roots may grow towards the pipes and eventually break through them. This can be a headache when dealing with this situation.

  • Improper Installation - If pipes are not properly installed in the beginning, it can lead to future problems, including pipe's malfunctioning/breaking.

In this situation you will need immediate help to extract the water and contents effected as quickly as possible to minimize damage to your property and belongings.

SERVPRO of Carson/West Carson is just a phone call away to help make it "Like it never even happened." Our highly trained crew will jump into action and get you back in a happy mood. (310)637-7701

Stay Ready For Your Family

5/31/2018 (Permalink)

ARE YOU READY?

You may need to survive on your own after an emergency. This means having your own food, water and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last for at least 72 hours. Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster but they cannot reach everyone immediately. You could get help in hours or it might take days. Depending on the nature of the disaster road conditions may prevent help from arriving in a timely manner. Earthquake, hurricane's, or heavy rain, we should always be ready when the unexpected occurs.

Additionally, basic services such as electricity, gas, water, sewage treatment and telephones may be cut off for days or even a week, or longer. Your supplies kit should contain items to help you manage during these outages.  If the power goes out keep your pipes from freezing by shutting off the valve that allows water to come into your home. Then, open any drain valves and all faucets and let them run until the pipes are empty (it's helpful to identify these valves in advance). Next, flush all toilets and pour denatured alcohol into toilets and sinks to prevent water in the traps from freezing.

Be prepared for a power outage by keeping necessary items centrally located in your home. Take the time to ensure that everyone in your family is aware of the "kit." Periodically check your kit to see that batteries operate properly. The following is a list of items that are suggested to keep on hand:

1.     Flashlights for each family member

2.     Battery-operated radio and clock

3.     Extra batteries

4.     Containers of bottled water

5.     Canned, freeze-dried or dehydrated food, powdered milk, baby supplies for infants

6.     Non-electric can opener

7.     List of important phone numbers

8.     First-aid kit

Following a disaster, there may be power outages that could last for several days. Stock canned foods, dry mixes and other staples that do not require refrigeration, cooking, water or special preparation. Be sure to include a manual can opener and eating utensils. The following items are suggested when selecting emergency food supplies. You may already have many of these on hand.

•Store at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food.

•Choose foods your family will eat.

•Remember any special dietary needs.

•Avoid foods that will make you thirsty.

•Choose salt-free crackers, whole grain cereals and canned foods with high liquid content.

•Ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits, vegetables and a can opener

•Protein or fruit bars

•Dry cereal or granola

•Peanut butter

•Dried fruit

•Nuts

•Crackers

•Canned juices

•Non-perishable pasteurized milk

•High energy foods

•Vitamins

•Food for infants

•Comfort/stress foods

We hope this was useful and made you consider this as a priority, you just never know when something tragic might occur, its always best to stay READY.

Preparation To Avoid Fires

5/31/2018 (Permalink)

Stay Fire Ready

The 7 Ways to Prepare for a Home Fire

1.) Install the right number of smoke alarms. Test them once a month and replace the batteries at least once a year.

2.) Teach children what smoke alarms sound like and what to do when they hear one.

3.) Ensure that all household members know 2 ways to escape from every room of your home and know the family meeting spot outside of your home.

4.) Establish a family emergency communications plan and ensure that all household members know who to contact if they cannot find one another.

5.) Practice escaping from your home at least twice a year. Press the smoke alarm test button or yell “Fire“ to alert everyone that they must get out.

6.) Make sure everyone knows how to call 9-1-1.

7.) Teach household members to STOP, DROP and ROLL if their clothes should catch on fire.

What To Do if a Fire Starts

5/31/2018 (Permalink)

Fire Plan

If a Fire Starts:
  • Know how to safely operate a fire extinguisher
  • Remember to GET OUT, STAY OUT and CALL 9-1-1 or your local emergency phone number.
  • Yell "Fire!" several times and go outside right away. If you live in a building with elevators, use the stairs. Leave all your things where they are and save yourself.
  • If closed doors or handles are warm or smoke blocks your primary escape route, use your second way out. Never open doors that are warm to the touch.
  • If you must escape through smoke, get low and go under the smoke to your exit. Close doors behind you.
  • If smoke, heat or flames block your exit routes, stay in the room with doors closed. Place a wet towel under the door and call the fire department or 9-1-1. Open a window and wave a brightly colored cloth or flashlight to signal for help.
  • Once you are outside, go to your meeting place and then send one person to call the fire department. If you cannot get to your meeting place, follow your family emergency communication plan.

After the fire trucks leave, your home likely suffers from fire and smoke damage and extensive water damage from firefighting efforts. SERVPRO of Carson/West Carson has specialized fire restoration training needed to restore your home to pre-fire condition.

Have Questions About Fire, Smoke, or Soot Damage? Call Today –(310) 637-7701

Every fire damage event is a little different, and requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate our process for the “typical” fire damage emergency.

Step 1: Emergency Contact

The restoration process begins when you call us. Our representative will ask questions regarding the fire damage event that will help us respond immediately with the appropriate equipment and resources.

Step 2: Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment

We carefully inspect and test all rooms of your property to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage. This step is crucial to developing a plan of action.

Step 3: Immediate Board-Up and Roof-Tarp Service

Fire damage can often compromise windows, walls, and roofs. To maintain security and to protect against further damage, we can board up missing windows and walls and place tarps on damaged roofs.

Step 4: Water Removal and Drying (if water damage is present)

The water removal process begins almost immediately and removes the majority of the water. We then use dehumidifiers and air movers to remove the remaining water and complete the drying process.

Step 5: Removal of Smoke and Soot from All Surfaces

We use specialized equipment and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and other surfaces.

Step 6: Cleaning and Sanitizing

We clean, sanitize, and disinfect all of the restorable items and structures that were damaged by the fire. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to restore your belongings to pre-fire condition. We’re also trained to remove odors using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.

Step 7: Restoration

Restoration is the final step—getting your home or business to its pre-fire condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.

4th of July Safety

5/31/2018 (Permalink)

Stay Safe From Fireworks

4th of July is just around the Corner, for many Americans, July Fourth is a day to lounge by the pool, barbecue, and watch fireworks. But before you celebrate with a bang this year, make sure you’re prepared. What if one of the explosions damages your house or a neighbors.

Facts

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) says people report more fires on the Fourth of July than on any other day in the year.

Children are particularly at risk. Those between five to nine years old are the most likely to be hurt by fireworks. Kids 10 to 19 followed as the second most vulnerable group. In 2018 alone, firecrackers and similar explosives injured nearly 10,000 youths.

You may believe “kiddie” fireworks like sparklers or bloomers aren’t dangerous. But they can cause fires or serious injuries. In fact, sparklers caused more than one-quarter of fireworks-related damage in 2014. That makes a lot of sense after you hear sparklers burn at 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit.

House Maintenance Could Save You $$ Thousand's$$

5/30/2018 (Permalink)

Check Your Home

If your home is more than 40 years old and hasn't had any major renovations... You should consider doing a walk through to see if you have any signs of corroded pipes, roof leaks, Mold growth, bellying from a storm, etc...

Water damage is one of the most expensive, stressful claims to deal with, when you suffer from a loss. Remember that insurance companies don't cover flood insurance unless you have it!

The pH of the water: In copper piping systems, if the pH is under a certain level it harms the protective barrier of the pipe and leads to corrosion. Oxygen in the water: Oxygen degrades metals, gradually converting the metal to rust.

In plain words, the metal from the piping dissolves into the water as a result of various causes, causingpipe failure and corrosion of water heaters, appliances, and fixtures. In plumbing systems, corrosion is due to physical and chemical reactions between the pipe material and water.

Bellying occurs when part of a storm pipe begins sinking downward after becoming unstable. This causes a reservoir where blockages can occur due to the build up of large debris. If left unchecked, problems with your storm pipe system can causeflooding and other water damage.

Mold in My Shower

MOLD IN MY BATHROOM

I was taking a shower one morning when I looked up and noticed black fuzz and dots growing on my ceiling and glass doors! I realized it was actually mold. Why does mold seem to like the bathroom the most and what can I do to prevent it from growing there?

You've got a problem there. First off, you should probably get that black stuff looked at and remediated by a professional like SERVPRO of Carson/West Carson. You don’t want to start scraping it off yourself. Mold can be linked to a whole host of allergy symptoms, and even if you’re not experiencing any of them, it’s a good idea to get the problem under control.

Let’s talk about what mold is and what makes it grow in the first place. Mold is a form of fungus that is found all around us in the natural environment.

However, when there is moisture indoors that isn’t dried immediately, such as when there is leakage or flooding, mold can grow behind/under surfaces.

If you can have your bathroom window cracked open about 3 to 4 inches most of the time, that alone would help out tremendously.

Mold can grow only when moisture can’t get out, and if your bathroom doesn’t have a vent, or if your vent isn’t working properly, that’s the first thing you need to fix.

If you do have a vent in your bathroom, make sure that you turn on the exhaust fan during and after your shower. The exhaust fan pulls the moisture out. So try and leave your bathroom windows or door open after you shower to help prevent any build up.

It’s also important to check underneath all the sinks in your house once or twice a year and make sure you don’t have any leaks. After all, even a hint of moisture in the wrong place can trigger mold growth.

If you ever have any questions or concerns about possible mold in your home or commercial facility, please don't hesitate to call us at (310) 637-7701

The Open House will feature trash trucks and equipment demonstrations in addition to facility tours, information booths, recycling games, and refreshments. Last year, more than 7,000 residents attended the Open House events with 290 city employees who volunteered their time to "give back" to the neighborhoods they serve throughout the year. There is no charge for admission and all ages are welcome, but we do request that pets be left at home for safety. Free food and giveaways are available while supplies last.

LA Sanitation’s Lopez Canyon Environmental Education Center will host an activity booth about the city’s green bin recycling program and give away small vegetable plants. Visitors will plant saplings to take home, use mulch and compost made from residential yard trimmings, and learn about “closed loop” recycling. More than 2,200 vegetable plants were potted and given away to residents last year. LA Sanitation will also partner with “City Plants” to provide 50 fruit and 50 shade trees for adoption by city residents, on a first-come-served basis at each yard, while supplies last. (L.A. city residents must present valid identification with their city address or a current DWP bill to adopt a tree. Note: the limit is one tree per property address.) “Used Tires” from city residents will also be collected, which is provided by a grant from CalRecycle. (L.A. city residents must present valid identification and a current DWP bill to drop off used tires. Note: a maximum of nine passenger and/or light truck tires will be accepted, but tires on rims and used tires from businesses will not be accepted.)

5 Easy Tips To Prevent Water Damage

4/26/2018 (Permalink)

Don't Get Wet

1. Be careful where you plant

Some plants and trees, like weeping willows, have pretty invasive roots. If you’re not careful, they’ll grow right into your sprinkler system, drainage field, pipes, and septic tanks. Plan before you plant to keep roots away from any water lines.

2. Clean out roof gutters

You know it’s on your to-do list anyway, so if you can, take a safe climb up to your roof next Sunday and check out your gutters. If you’re seeing lots of leaves, birds’ nests, sticks, and whatnot up there, your gutters may not be doing the job you hired them for. And on a rainy day, a clogged gutter can send water spilling into your home’s foundation, through the roof, or down to your basement. That could cause some serious water damage! So next time you’re doing some seasonal cleaning, make sure those gutters are clean. And if your gutters are too high, be safe and get a professional to check them.

3.  Keep an eye on your water bill

With so many water pipes hidden behind walls and in the floors in your house, you might not know there’s a leak until the damage is done. That’s why it’s a good idea to keep a close eye on your monthly water bill. If you see it starting to creep up, or get one that’s uncommonly high, it’s a pretty good sign that you may have a leak somewhere.

4. Use a drain snake instead of unclogging chemicals

No matter how crazy clean you are, from your shower to your kitchen sink, clogs are going to happen. And chances are at some point in your life you’ve used one of those powerful chemical drain cleaners to get things moving again. But as convenient as they may be, most folks don’t realize those caustic chemicals are also eating away at their pipes (and they might not be too good for you either). If you rely on them a lot, you could be setting yourself up for leaks. That’s why owning a drain snake is a good solution to clear away clogs. They’re pretty inexpensive, you can get them at your local hardware store, and they can cut through most any clog you’ll have without damaging pipes or making your eyes red and teary.

5. Never pour grease down your sink

You’ve probably heard this before, but you should definitely avoid pouring grease down your kitchen sink. It doesn’t matter if you flush it with hot or cold water. It can still congeal and cling to your pipes, and could still cause some serious damage and blockage.

Some people use detergent to break up grease before pouring it down the drain…and that may help sometimes. But there’s no guarantee that it’ll keep the grease from sticking to your pipes, so why take the risk?

The safest thing to do is just to pour your grease in an empty can, and either let it sit or put it in the refrigerator. Once it hardens you can toss it in the trash and get rid of it. Done and done.

Hazardous Materials in the Home

HAZMAT

Hazardous materials in the home can be very dangerous not only to children, adults and pets living in the residence but also for the environment if materials are handled improperly.

Common products within your home could make your home a potential site for a mini hazardous materials (hazmat) incident, particularly during an earthquake.

Strong ground shaking could topple and break bottles and cans which contain hazardous materials. Follow these helpful instructions when dealing with hazardous materials:

The Do Nots when preparing to dispose of hazardous materials:

? Do not throw it in the trash.

? Do not pour it in the kitchen sink.

? Do not flush it down the toilet.

? Do not pour it on the ground or down the gutter or storm drain.

This will eventually end up in the ocean, potentially harming wildlife.

When using household products, keep in mind the acronym L-I-E-S

? L imit the amount of material stored.

? I solate the products in closed cabinets and             keep containers tightly covered.

? E liminate unused or unneeded supplies.

? S separate incompatible materials.

The following materials may be taken to a Hazardous Materials Roundup

Batteries, Old Fuel, Various Cleaners,Paint Thinners, Latex or Oil Base Paints, Expired Medicines, Lighter Fluid, Stains/Varnishes, Nail Polish Remover, Antifreeze, Products w/ Acid or Lye Herbicides and Pesticides, Motor Oils, Pool Chemicals, Hair Spray, Aerosol Cans ,Solvents , and Transmission Fluid are some of the most common items found in a household that can be hazardous.

How to Prevent Water Damage

4/2/2018 (Permalink)

DONT LET THIS BE YOU...

Preventing water damage is a whole lot cheaper than paying for repairs. Here are three easy prevention tips.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Clean your gutters, Ensure good drainage.

  • Direct downspouts 5-10’ away from the house.

  • Test your sump pump once a year.

  • Fix all water leaks.

  • Replace missing roof shingles.

Water damage is the No. 1 culprit that weakens your home’s foundation and the very core that holds your house together.

You’ve heard about core strength for your body. Well, water damage hits at the core strength of your house, eventually causing serious structural damage. Damp wood invites termites and carpenter ants; plus, it causes mold and mildew.

Here’s how to prevent water damage using three easy strategies that will give you peace of mind the next time heavy storms hit.

#1. Ensure Good Drainage

Why it matters: Poor drainage weakens your foundation, causing cracks, uneven settling, and pathways for water to enter your home.

How to do it:

  • clean your gutter routinely, A clogged gutter will send cascades of water down the side of your house, damaging your siding and foundation.
  • Ensure your downspouts direct water 5 to 10 feet away from your house.
  • Make sure your yard is sloped at least 6 inches over a 10-foot span away from your foundation. That slope keeps water from getting down right next to your foundation, where it could cause walls to lean, crack the masonry, and create leaks. (For crawl spaces, keeping water away makes sure excess water doesn’t pool underneath your floor, making for damp conditions that encourage mold, rot, and insects.)
  • But don’t let the soil get too dry, either. Long dry spells let the soil around your house dry out and shrink. A big rain may make the soil expand, putting pressure on your foundation walls. In a drought, run a soaker hose at least 6 inches from the foundation and 3 inches under the soil to keep the soil from contracting and expanding.

Maintenance cost: Very little. Cleaning gutters can be a no-cost DIY job, or you can hire a pro for $50 to $250, depending on the size and height of your home. To get the soil slope you need, you might have to buy some additional topsoil.

Worst case if you put it off: Your foundation could settle, cracking your basement walls. The cost to stabilize, repair, and seal deteriorated foundation walls is a whopping $15,000 to $40,000.

#2. Test Your Sump Pump Regularly

Why it matters: Sump pumps come to life during storms. That’s not when you want to realize yours isn’t working properly. You should check it at least once a year, and ideally perform several checks during heavy storm seasons.

How to test your sump pump:

  1. Slowly fill the sump pump pit with water. Watch for the “float” (similar to the float in your toilet) to rise, which should turn on the pump. Then watch to make sure the water level falls.
  2. Test your backup pump the same way, but unplug the main pump first.
  3. If you don’t have a backup pump or a generator, and are on municipal water, get one that runs on water pressure. If you’re on well water, your only option is the battery kind.

#3. Check for Water Leaks and Fix Them

Why it matters: Persistent leaks lead to mold and mildew, rot, and even termites and carpenter ants (they like chewing soggy wood, since it’s soft). Yet if you fix a leak soon after it starts, there may be no long-term damage at all.

How to check for leaks:

  • Check for dark spots under pipes inside sink cabinets, stains on ceilings, toilets that rock, and of course drips.
  • At least once a year, inspect your roof. Repair missing, loose, and damaged shingles. Repair any cracked caulking and check for leaks around flashing.

How Dirty Is Gym Equipment?

4/2/2018 (Permalink)

STAY SAFE

Your local gym is one of the dirtiest places you'll visit today. Free weights are contaminated with up to 362 times more bacteria than a toilet seat, and a treadmill holds 74 times more bacteria than the average washroom faucet, among other really nasty facts.

Think of this??

While the gym is the go-to place to improve your fitness, health and boost your self-esteem, it may be one of the grossest and dirtiest places you're ever going to visit. Truth be told, the griminess of a public washroom doesn't even compare to the filth you'd find in your average gym.

SERVPRO of Carson/West Carson- tested an athletic facility for contamination levels, and we found high levels of bacteria in the following places.

The typical free weights contain up to 362 times more bacteria than a toilet seat. It's pretty shocking but, at the same time, when was the last time you saw someone washing down the barbells at your gym?

Exercise bikes aren't much better, containing 39 times more bacteria that a plastic reusable cafeteria tray. You would think treadmills are at least somewhat clean because they're supposed to be wiped after each use, but each machine averages 74 times more bacteria than a typical washroom faucet.

The really bad news? 52% of bacteria found on the average treadmil can cause skin infections, and even pneumonia and septicemia.

On top of all this, 70% of bacteria found on all gym equipment analyzed are potentially harmful to humans, and 31% of all bacteria found are largely resistant to antibiotics.

The free weights and exercise bikes that were sampled also turned up Bacillus, which is a potential cause of various conditions, including ear, eye, and respiratory infections.

There are a few ways to improve cleanliness at the gym.

In an athletic environment, its important to both clean surface areas where athletes are likely to make contact, yet ensure that the disinfectant used is safe for skin contact and does not leave an unpleasant or lingering odor.

When we’re asked to clean facilities, three questions are normally asked:

  1. How do you clean these areas without leaving a chemical odor or harming an athlete's skin?
  2. How do you really know its clean?
  3. When are you available and how fast can you do the work?

How do you clean these areas without leaving a chemical odor or harming an athlete's skin?

SERVPRO of Carson/West Carson has various options to help meet the needs of different teams and facilities.  A popular option is to use a Fragrance-Free Disinfectant with anti-microbial, mildewcide, bactericide, fungicide, and deodorant properties.  Once this cleaning agent is dried on the surface, it’s safe for an athlete to touch.  To further help eliminate odor, we can also install a temporary air scrubber with carbon and HEPA filtration for the duration of the cleaning process.

Whatever the needs of your facility, rest assured that SERVPRO of Carson/West Carson will do whatever to help keep YOU and your customers happy. We work quick and efficient, and do whatever it takes to make our customers happy.

Controlling MOLD in your Residential Home/Commercial Facility

4/2/2018 (Permalink)

Keep your loved ones safe

Mold cannot be completely removed.  It is a natural part of our environment and exists in microscopic spores.  Many restoration businesses advertise "mold removal" and even guarantee to remove all mold. This isn’t possible.  What you are going to be doing, instead, is removing the triggers in your home that cause mold that causes large amounts of mold growth.

Where Mold is Likely to Grow

Mold is likely to grow in places that are dark, warm, and humid places.  These places include kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms.  It’s also likely to grow in places that have previously had a water damage that wasn’t dried properly.  If you smell something musty in the air or see black spots growing on your walls, you may have mold.

How to Control Mold Growth

  1. Fix anything that is leaking.  That includes pipes, windows, and roofs.  A leaking structure or pipe that isn’t fixed will eventually cause mold growth and damage the structure that is absorbing its moisture.  Most people discover a leaking roof or pipe when they see secondary damage to their home, like a small pool of water on the floor or a water spot on their ceiling.
  2. Control the humidity in your home.  Mold likes to grow in high humidity.  An appropriate humidity level for your home is 40-50% Relative Humidity (RH).  In the winter months, it may be lower than 40% RH.  You can purchase a home hygrometer (a humidity meter) and temperature gauge at your local home and hardware store or online for less than $10.
  3. Ventilate humid areas.  Humid areas in homes are typically the kitchen, shower, and laundry areas where warm water is used.  After doing any of these activities, turn on your ventilation fan.
  4. Hire an experienced and proven water damage cleanup company.  If your property experiences flooding, hire a company with a record of successfully cleaning water damages from properties.  This company should extract water and monitor your property as it dries.  Ask for documentation to verify your structure has been properly dried.

If you find or suspect mold growing in your home, call us.  We will assess your property and, if anything is found, remediate your mold and help you find the cause of the mold and fix it.

SERVPRO of Carson/West Carson has over 15 years of experience mitigating water, fire, and mold damages.  We are a licensed mold contractor and respond 24/7 every day of the year.  Call us for any questions or concerns (310) 637-7701
